A German couple's cabin adventure in Norway
Their journey, which started years ago, finally led them to Norway and Sjusjøen, where they found the perfect site and the right partner in Nordlyshytter.
The beginning of a dream
For Isabella and Markus, the idea of owning a cabin was always present, but the right opportunity had never materialized—until now. Passionate about cross-country skiing, hiking, and cycling, they sought a peaceful retreat far from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Norway’s diverse landscapes, welcoming people, and lack of overcrowding made it their top choice. The ease of communicating in English was another advantage, simplifying the planning and construction process. However, Norway’s serene beauty and opportunities for adventure ultimately won them over.
Their search began online, browsing through various options and requesting catalogs for inspiration. When they discovered Nordlyshytter, they were impressed by the quick responses from the sales reperesentative Hildegunn Sanne, collaborative approach, and flexibility in finalizing their cabin plans. These factors played a crucial role in their decision-making.
“From the first sketch to stepping into our finished cabin, the process felt personal, smooth, and exciting. We’re so glad we chose Nordlyshytter.”
— Isabella & Markus
Choosing the perfect cabin
Several factors influenced their decision. They needed space for 6-8 people, two bedrooms on the main floor, and additional sleeping quarters upstairs. They ended up with the model Lofoten 94. The hems (the loft) with its breathtaking views was a major highlight, and the inclusion of a sauna added to the appeal. Beyond the design and competitive pricing, the couple appreciated the straightforward communication with the Nordlyshytter team. The company’s collaboration with local electricians and plumbers provided additional peace of mind, ensuring continued support even after construction.
For Markus and Isabella, the hems, sauna, and large panoramic windows are the standout features of their cabin. The lots of natural light make the space feel open and fresh, creating a sanctuary that perfectly blends with nature.
Overcoming challenges as foreign buyers
"Navigating Norway’s bureaucracy was a learning experience. Registering for a D-number, opening a bank account with a Norwegian bank and handling legal paperwork required patience. We also needed personal presence , up-to-date travel documents and certification from a German lawyer.
Fortunately, the local municipality provided support in finding a reliable contractor for the foundation work, which helped make the process smoother"

Key requirements for foreign buyers:
✅ D-number (When you buy the plot you get a D-number. It is Norwegian identification number for foreigners)
✅ Norwegian bank account
✅ Legal certification from home country. Provide documentation to verity identity from home country lawyer.
✅ Electronic certification - your digital identity in Norway– You must have a Norwegian identification number (national identity number or D number) to get an electronic ID. The most common are BankID and MiniID. BankID is offered by banks in Norway and is based on a common infrastructure that has been developed by the banking industry.
BankID is a personal and simple form of electronic proof of identity for secure identification and signing online. Required for signing contracts and logging into public services
It’s important to note that not all Norwegian banks offer BankID to foreigners with only a D-number, so early planning is key. We recommend contacting your preferred bank in advance to verify their policies.
Traveltime and lifestyle
Their journey from Stuttgart to their cabin is seamless with just a few hour flight to Oslo followed by a 1.5-hour drive. They plan to spend their full winter and summer vacations at the cabin, immersing themselves in Norway’s nature.
For this German couple, owning a cabin in Norway is more than just a property – it’s a way of life. Their cabin serves as a perfect base for cross-country skiing, cycling, and hiking❤️⛷ 🚴
